TITLE: Court Clerk
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Chief Supreme Court Justice
CONTROLLING SUPERVISOR: Chair
LOCATION:  Kaw City

SUMMARY:
This full-time position serves as Court Administrator, with the duty of assisting the lawful functioning of the tribal court.  Responsible for implementing and maintaining the clerical administration of the court.  Shall be subject to judicial proceedings by the Supreme Court Justices, with all employment related issues and decisions to be made by the Chair of the Kaw Nation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Four years experience in responsible position in the administration of courts or a bachelor’s degree in court room procedures or related field or any equivalent combination of education and experience.  Must have computer and data base experience.  Basic knowledge of legal system, terminology, and courtroom procedures.  Skill working in a responsive and pleasant manner with the public and court personnel.  Be familiar with the complete rules of the tribal court.  Must be able to maintain confidentiality.  Valid Driver's license and must be insurable with Kaw Nation insurance carrier.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
  • Process complaints and other legal documents, draft subpoenas, warrants, writs, and other orders of the tribal court. 
  • Maintain records of court proceedings. 
  • Responsible for the transcription of testimony, typing, preparing and mailing jury lists.
  • Prepare court transcripts on request. 
  • Collect and account for fines and other property taken into custody by the court. 
  • File notices of petitions and appeals.
  • Responsible for contacting witnesses, attorneys and litigants to obtain information and to inform/notify them when to appear in court.
  • Responsible for all clerical and stenographic support of the court, including answering the phones. 
  • Type all court papers and correspondence, maintain all pertinent files.
  • Operate all business machines necessary to the court.
  • Set hearing calendar on instruction from the judge.        
  • Issue summons, subpoenas, and executions of documents.
  • Maintain financial records of the court.
  • Prepare and submit timely court budget and quarterly reports.
  • Fill Jury panels. Give oaths to juries and witnesses or attorneys.
  • Record minutes of each hearing.
  • Receive and protect exhibits.
  • Prepare judgments for signature. 
  • Accept Bonds.
  • Assist in criminal arraignments.
  • Responsible for all duties set forth in section 304, Powers and Duties of the Kaw Nation Law and Order Code at Chapter 5.
  • Coordinate training of court personnel.
  • Coordinate activities with other law enforcement and state agencies for the enforcement of tribal court orders.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the immediate or controlling Supervisor.
